Beyond One Alloy:

Giant Group's Holistic Aluminum Strategy for a Lower-Carbon Bicycle Industry

Aluminum is the bicycle industry's most vital structural metal and one of its hardest to decarbonize. The industry navigates the global aluminum transition with three structural challenges: weak procurement leverage, an outsized carbon footprint concentrated in raw materials, and metallurgical purity limits unsuited to frame-grade recycling.

Giant Group's response with a holistic strategy that works across every layer, redesigning sourcing and production to cut emissions at the source: sourcing 100% green aluminum at its Taiwan facility, refining pre-consumer recycled aluminum in-house at D.MAG with full traceability, and developing RK6061, a frame-grade alloy made from 90–100% recycled aluminum with a TÜV-verified carbon footprint of 2.10 kg CO₂e/kg. By 2025, recycled aluminum accounted for 63.95% of total aluminum input across the Group.

Aluminum Has a Carbon Problem. Giant Group Is Changing That.

Aluminum is the backbone of the modern bicycle, strong, light, and built to last. But producing it has always come at a carbon cost the industry could not ignore. Conventional aluminum production is one of the most energy-intensive processes in the industry. Carbon intensity varies more than ten-fold depending on how and where aluminum is made. The starkest contrast is between newly smelted primary aluminum and recycled secondary aluminum: recycling uses only about 5% of the energy required for primary production and cuts associated emissions by more than 90%. The math is unambiguous and the path forward should be obvious.

However, the bicycle industry navigates this challenge with three compounding disadvantages:

The Procurement Gap.

icycles account for less than 1% of global aluminum demand. Against automotive and electronics giants locking up green and recycled supply through long-term contracts, bicycle brands rarely have the volume to compete on equal terms. The cleanest aluminum goes to the biggest buyers.

The Carbon Ceiling.

Raw materials drive 70% or more of a bicycle's total lifecycle emissions, and the aluminum frame is the single largest source. No downstream efficiency - leaner logistics, cleaner factories, lighter packaging can substitute for getting the material itself right.

The Purity Barrier.

End-of-life aluminum is rarely pure enough to meet frame-grade specifications. Without source-level traceability, even where recycled content exists, the data to verify its actual carbon impact often does not. The industry has largely been forced to downcycle recovered material or use it as a minor additive in virgin alloy — falling far short of aluminum's true circular potential. The problem is structural. The scale is significant. And no one else in the bicycle industry is positioned to solve it.

Giant Group is responding with a smarter approach to material itself, not through incremental adjustments, but through a clean industrial revolution that starts with aluminum.

Beginning Upstream: Why Giant Group's Taiwan Facility Sources Only Green Aluminum

The first lever to reduce aluminum's footprint is to start with cleaner primary material - Green aluminum. Conventional primary aluminum smelted using fossil-fuel electricity carries a carbon footprint of 12 to 20 tonnes of CO₂ per tonne of metal. Green aluminum, made using renewable hydroelectric power, brings that figure below 4 tonnes. That is not a marginal improvement. It is a fundamental shift in what aluminum means for the planet. Giant Group Taiwan Manufacturing sources 100% green aluminum for all raw aluminum input. This is a deliberate choice, made at a cost, in a market where green supply is scarce and demand from the automotive and electronics industries is fierce. It is reinforced downstream by on-site renewable electricity, which accounts for 15.6% of the Group's total consumption today, on track toward the 2030 factory target of 18.5%.

Bringing the Loop In-House: Traceability That Makes Verification Possible

The next piece addresses the manufacturing scrap generated inside Giant Group's own facilities and making sure nothing goes to waste and that every claim can be proven. Every manufacturing process generates scrap. Historically, the bicycle industry sold that material to external smelters, where it disappeared into the general aluminum pool, untraceable and unverifiable. Giant Group built a different system. Our proprietary alloy facility, D.MAG, was purpose-built to keep pre-consumer aluminum in-house and to track every kilogram from source to finished product. Each batch carries full documentation of its origin, composition, processing parameters, and carbon footprint. This is the infrastructure that makes independent verification possible.

RK6061: Frame-Grade Performance. A Fraction of the Carbon.

Giant Group's proprietary alloy facility, D.MAG, was re-specialized to keep this material in-house — and to do something the broader industry rarely can: track every kilogram of aluminum input from source to finished product. RK6061 uses argon degassing and precision filtration to achieve the purity that bicycle frames demand, eliminating the porosity and microscopic inclusions that cause fatigue failure under real-world riding loads. The result meets and exceeds industry-standard 6061 specifications: 281 MPa yield strength, 310 MPa tensile strength, 14.5% elongation.5 The carbon footprint is 2.10 kg CO₂e/kg at the billet stage, independently verified by TÜV Rheinland under ISO 14067:2018. Compared to conventional thermal-power aluminum billet at 16.99 kg CO₂e/kg - that is an 88% reduction.6 RK6061 is not just a concept, it is the alloy in Giant Bicycle's newly launched STP series in 2026.

The Next Frontier: Post-Consumer

Aluminum Giant Group is committed to going further. The hardest challenge in aluminum circularity is post-consumer material, scrap recovered from end-of-life frames, cans, and automotive parts. Impurity levels, reverse logistics, and the absence of standardized recovery systems make this the frontier no bicycle company has yet solved. We are actively researching pathways to bring post-consumer aluminum into frame grade production.
