The Ministry of Economic Affairs hosted its annual Energy Conservation Recognition Ceremony today (December 19). Giant Group Taiwan Manufacturing was honored with the Silver Award in the 2024 Energy Conservation Benchmark Awards. This achievement marks a significant milestone, as Giant Group is the first company in the bicycle industry to receive this prestigious award.
The Energy Conservation Benchmark Awards aim to recognize enterprises that demonstrate excellence in energy-saving performance, serve as industry leaders in implementing sustainable practices, and achieve net-zero transformation. The awards are categorized into six groups based on industry characteristics, energy consumption, and carbon emissions, further divided into production and non-production sectors.
Giant Group Taiwan Manufacturing distinguished itself in the competitive “Group B” category, emerging as one of only two enterprises to receive the Silver Award. This recognition highlights the company’s dedication to energy efficiency, carbon reduction, and green sustainable development through innovative and impactful measures.
Key Energy Conservation Measures:
1. Transition from Electric Heating to Steam-Based Hot Press Systems
To enhance the energy efficiency of carbon fiber molding, Giant Group Taiwan Manufacturing replaced high-energy-consuming electric heating systems with steam-based hot press systems. This transition not only significantly reduces electricity consumption but also improves product quality and stability, effectively minimizing waste.
2. Recycling of Waste Cold Energy
Previously, the freezing of liquid nitrogen and liquid argon pipelines required manual de-icing using approximately 5 tons of water weekly. Giant Group Taiwan Manufacturing addressed this by designing a water storage tank and reconfiguring the cooling water circuit. Meltwater is now redirected and reused in production processes, reducing the workload on cooling systems and conserving water.
2023 Energy Conservation and Carbon Reduction Achievements
• Energy Savings: Equivalent to 351 kiloliters of oil
• Cost Savings: NT$12.32 million
• Carbon Reduction: 1,620 metric tons of CO2e
• Electricity Savings: 299,800 kWh
